A brief standoff ended with an arrest Friday night of a Carson City man who allegedly obstructed officers with a gun after the suspect had called 911 to report threats, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Peter Wene, 56, was taken into custody after officers made contact with him by phone at an apartment complex in the 2800 block of Menlo Drive. According to the arrest report, a deputy was called to the area at 6:21 p.m. by the suspect who reported threats were made toward him.

A deputy went to the man’s apartment and observed the door was opened. The officer knocked on the door and stated he was with the sheriff’s office and saw the man sitting in a recliner.

The man, who it was learned later was intoxicated, jumped out of the recliner and grabbed a revolver from a night stand with both hands and picked it up. The officer identified himself and told the man to drop the gun and put up his hands. The deputy urged the man to put down the weapon and to step outside with his hands up so they could talk. The man said he would not. The officer explained to the man he was there because he called the sheriff’s office. The officer asked the man if he was going to shoot the officer and the man told the officer he would, the arrest report states.

The officer backed up around the corner of the apartment and kept an eye on the door. As the officer backed up, the man shut the door. The officer requested the sergeant on shift to respond to the location. A sergeant and deputy arrived on scene and the arresting deputy briefed them on the situation. The sergeant advised the deputy to attempt to speak with the man on the phone.

The deputy was able to contact the man and attempted to get him to step outside with his hands up. The man said he was not going to, he told the officer to get a search warrant and then hung up the phone. The officer attempted a second call. The man told him he had called the sheriff’s office two days prior about a threat made toward him and that nothing was done about it. He again told the officer to get a warrant and then hung up.

A third attempted was made by the deputy. He hung up and then came outside with a walking stick in his hands and his hands up. He was arrested at 7:16 p.m. and resisted cuffs and would not walk on his own to the patrol car, dragging his feet. He was taken to Carson Tahoe Hospital for medical clearance, the arrest report states.

Officers obtained a search warrant to search for the revolver. It was found in a shoe box in his bedroom, along with a shotgun. There was also a box that had multiple drug paraphernalia items. The officer left the copy of the search warrant and placed the firearms and drug paraphernalia into evidence.

Wene faces felony charges of resisting and obstructing with a firearm, owning and possession of firearms by a prohibited person and 9 misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $10,000 on the felony charges, $9,000 on the misdemeanor charges.
